Bonsai Exhibition
The National Bonsai Collection of Scotland will once again bring its impressive Bonsai Exhibition to Gardening Scotland. NBCS mounts its usual three award winning bonsai tree displays but this year a new dimension in the shape of SUISEKI will be introduced.
SUISEKI is a Japanese term meaning beautiful/interesting stones. Think collecting such things on the beach as a youngster. Think the wonderment inspired by the Standing Stones of Stenness on Orkney or the Callinish stone circle on Lewis and you get the idea.
Usually only a few inches long and up to 18 inches tall, these viewing stones have been shaped by weather or waves. They remind us of natural features like waterfall sites, peaks, islands or headlands.
When on display, they’re usually mounted on wood stands called daizas and the art is spreading rapidly across the Western world.
NBCS will introduce a small, simple display this year with a view to increase interest and perhaps start a competition in the future. For further details contact Alistair on alistair@deganwy.net or Margaret on 01501763900.
The Scottish Bonsai Association will mount its usual competition for trees designed by amateur members, which attracts well over a hundred stunning entries.
