The WorldSkills UK (WSUK) Landscape Gardening Competition is run by The British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI www.bali.org.uk ) on behalf of UKSkills. UKSkills organise over 70 dynamic WSUK competitions annually for both young people and adult students that are designed by industry experts.  Last year around 4,000 people registered to compete in a WSUK competition.

This year, thanks to Scottish Government support, Gardening Scotland will host Heat 2 of the WSUK Landscape Gardening Competition.  Up to 6 individual competitors, who are studying towards their relevant qualifications in Landscape Gardening, will build small landscaped gardens live each day of the show. They have 8 hours to demonstrate their skills as landscape gardeners and impress industry expert judges chosen by BALI. The garden designs have been produced by Patricia Fox MSGD who won a 2009 BALI National Landscape Award for Design Excellence.  www.aralia.org.uk

The highest scoring competitors across all regional heats will be invited to attend the UK final this September at Malvern Autumn Show.  The UK Final is the ultimate test.  Competitors will be put into teams of two and have 4 days to construct a 6x6m garden.

Entrants from this year’s competition may be selected to represent the UK at WorldSkills London 2011. The biennial WorldSkills event attracts over 1,200 competitors from around 50 countries/regions who all come together to compete for medals on an international stage. At WorldSkills Calgary 2009 the Landscape Gardening team won a Medallion for Excellence. In 2011 WorldSkills will be held in London at Excel between 5th – 8th October. www.worldskillslondon2011.com
