To most gardeners a ‘tweet’ is what you hear as you dig the vegetable patch or hoe between plants – it is the sound of the birdlife that lives in the surrounding shrubbery and hedges. Now though a new ‘tweet’ has been added to the chorus and you won’t find this one in the trees.

This ‘tweet’ comes from Twitter, one of the fastest growing new social media websites.

Twitter is different from Facebook or Bebo because posts are restricted to just 140 characters in length. But far from being a drawback, this pithy style makes Twitter the closest thing to real conversation yet invented on the web.

Twitter is a favourite with many celebrities, including Stephen Fry and Eddie Izzard, who both post new ‘tweets’ several times a day and Gardening Scotland is also on Twitter, under the name of GardenScotland.

By joining Twitter we’ve discovered an on-line community of gardeners who are constantly swapping information and ideas, and they are not just enthusiastic amateurs. Amongst the top designers who use Twitter regularly are Cleve West and James Alexander Sinclair.
